Iso Butanol Prices: Market Analysis, Trend, News, Graph and Demand

North America

The U.S. Iso-Butanol market experienced a largely bearish trend in Q4 2024, with prices plunging by around 31% amid ample supply. Despite disruptions from the hurricane season affecting production and logistics, large inventories built by suppliers sustained downward pressure on prices. Efforts by producers like Eastman Chemicals to reverse the trend—such as a proposed price hike of USD 110/MT for October—had minimal impact.

Demand remained weak, particularly from the construction sector, further reinforcing the bearish sentiment. Export activities were negatively impacted by a three-day strike between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX), which created backlogs and led to inventory accumulation at key ports.

As the quarter drew to a close, destocking intensified. Suppliers, concerned about year-end tax implications and inventory devaluation, rushed to offload excess stocks, adding to the already weak market conditions.

Europe

The European Iso-Butanol market declined by approximately 12% in Q4 2024, driven by oversupply and weak demand. Following OQ Chemicals’ return to operations in May, the market struggled to recover, with sluggish demand from key sectors like paints and coatings weighing heavily. Destocking began as early as mid-November, exacerbating price pressures.

Rising feedstock Propylene costs could not be passed on to buyers, squeezing producer margins. Meanwhile, trading was hampered by closed arbitrage windows and inland disruptions due to port maintenance in Northwestern Europe. Inventory accumulation persisted, prompting producers to cut output in an attempt to stabilize the market. However, with minimal outages and sustained supply levels, these measures proved largely ineffective.

Asia-Pacific

In contrast, the Asia-Pacific Iso-Butanol market saw a bullish trend, with prices increasing by about 6% due to tight supply, particularly from Taiwan. Seasonal hurricanes in the South China Sea disrupted shipping routes, limiting product arrivals in Japan. Mid-quarter, major producers like JNC Corporation announced price increases of roughly Yen 15,000/MT, reinforcing the upward trend.

By year-end, maintenance turnarounds at major facilities like Formosa Plastics and Nan Ya Plastics further restricted supply to the Japanese market. Although demand remained subdued, particularly from Japan’s struggling construction sector, low operating rates at PDH units across East Asia helped maintain upward price pressure despite weak consumption.
